Steven Stamkos: Malkin is an ideal hockey player
Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos spoke about the odds of him winning the Hart Trophy this season and gave credit to one of his biggest rivals, Russian star Yevgeny Malkin.
«If we miss out on the play-offs, my chances of winning individual honours will be pretty low. But I am honoured to even be listed among the nominees. I’ll try to get as many points as I can before the end of the season.»
«What can you say about your main rival for the MVP prize – Penguins forward Yevgeny Malkin?»
«Geno is a perfect hockey player. It’s rare to see such a balanced combination of speed, strength, vision, shooting ability and intelligence in a single player. Malkin can win a game almost single-handedly, and has done so on a number of occasions this season. He has improved immensely, especially after recovering from his knee injury.»
«What are the key differences between Malkin and yourself?»
«Our styles are totally different. He likes to take control of the puck and has the physical strength to hold off the opponents. This allows him to evaluate the situation and make the best decision. I rely more on my speed and intuition. I wait for my moment, open up and score. It’s great to be rivals with such a incredible talent, I enjoy it. I hope the rivalry last for many more years,» Stamkos told Sport-Express.
