Maria Sharapova fans unite over shirt with message
Nick McCarvel, USA TODAY Sports
June 2, 2016
PARIS — With a decision expected any day in Maria Sharapova’s doping case, the Russian has spurred an unusual trend among her fans: They’re all wearing the same shirt.
The shirt, a Zara tee that says “Back in 5 Minutes,” was Sharapova’s choice in attire at a Sugarpova candy launch May 24 in Chicago.
But after Sharapova was photographed wearing the shirt, fans of hers began buying it themselves, purchasing the tees in droves and tweeting out pictures of themselves with the hashtag #IStandwithMaria, voicing their support for the tennis player.
The shirt could be viewed as a message to tennis: Sharapova would like to be back – and quickly – after she revealed in March that she tested positive for the banned substance meldonium at the Australian Open in January.
Her hearing with the Tennis Anti-Doping Program was held two weeks ago in London. Sharapova could face up to four years away from the tour, though the 29-year-old is expected to get six months to a year.
Sharapova has been noticeably more active on social media – formerly a place of curated brand placement – since her announcement, often re-tweeting fans using the #IStandwithMaria hashtag and thanking her #SharaFamily, as she calls them.
Sharapova retweeted over 50 fans who had sent in pictures of themselves in the shirt from places like Beirut, Poland, Montreal and the Philippines.
“The only and real meaning that matters to me is all my fans and I are bonding over a Zara shirt out of coincidence,” Sharapova tweeted on Monday.
And then, on Tuesday: “I don’t think I have ever [retweeted] so much, this really makes me smile in the mornings.”
“This has been all created by Maria’s fans, we had nothing to do with this,” said Sharapova’s agent, Max Eisenbud, in an email to USA TODAY Sports. “It is really cool to see.”
Zara did not immediately respond to request for comment.
