Washington Capitals get: F Anthony Beauvillier

Pittsburgh Penguins get: Washington’s 2025 second-round draft pick

Luszczyszyn: My immediate reaction to this deal was, “Anthony Beauvillier? For a second? In this economy?”

“This economy” has been a lot wilder than usual, a true seller’s market, but that still seemed like an extremely steep price for a player who doesn’t move the needle.

Then I looked deeper and I was pleasantly surprised at how Beauvillier had stepped his game up this season. He’s been quietly solid for the Penguins, enough for the deal to look a lot more understandable.

For starters, he’s scoring a lot for his minutes. His 0.93 goals per 60 would rank fifth on the Capitals, sandwiched between Aliaksei Protas (1.12) and Tom Wilson (0.89). That’s exactly what you want to see from a depth forward, and it’s no fluke, either. It stems from Beauvillier going to the net more and finding the dirty areas. His xG rate jumped from 0.77 per 60 last season to 1.05 this season. It’s led to his best play-driving numbers in years. Being one of the league’s best forecheckers — a key trait for playoff teams — also helps. His Net Rating this season puts him firmly in middle-six territory.

The fit feels great for Washington’s bottom six, and while the cost is a bit exorbitant, what Beauvillier has shown this season makes it passable. Either way, it’s a big win for the Penguins. Beauvillier was a reclamation project, and they turned him into someone worth a second-rounder. This time last year, he went for a fifth.
