Leonid Fedun: We propose to reduce number of teams in RPL to 14 by season 2013/14
Spartak Moscow owner Leonid Fedun proposed a change in the format of the Russian Premier League, which would involve reducing the number of participants to just 14.
«Here is my offer: by season 2013/14 we bring the number of clubs in the RPL to 14, as that is how many financially stable clubs Russia has at the moment,» the Russian billionaire proposed.
«14 teams means 26 rounds will be played – six of them can be held after the winter break. Then we split the teams into several groups: the first one (four clubs) will decide the league winner and teams to participate in the Champions League. Five teams in the second group will battle it out for a Europa League spot and the rest will be fighting to avoid relegation,» Fedun continued.
«That way the top clubs, who usually participate in the European tournaments, will play six games each in the two-odd months. The rest will play eight games each, as they are free of European commitments,» he concluded.
