Zenit – APOEL game interrupted twice due to firework smoke
The Champions League league game in St. Petersburg between Zenit and APOEL Nikosia was interrupted twice due to a thick smoke from the fireworks, which the home fans have been burning during the game.
In the 35th minute the game was interrupted for 4 minutes. Later in the 57th minute it was stopped once again. The referee Felix Brych took the teams off the pitch into the locker rooms, but then decided to continue the game. Meanwhile, Zenit head coach Luciano Spalletti, his assistant Igor Simutenkov and midfielder Roman Shirokov went to the stands in order to appease the fans.
Some Zenit fans also burned the flag of Turkey in order to express their support to the Greeks of Cyprus, who have been in conflict with the local Turks for the last few decades, which caused the island to be divided in two parts.
