Jordan Kyrou:
So I think we are all well aware of Kyrou’s fantastic season in Sarnia last year, and after watching him today, it’s not a surprise why. His skating, in all regards, is fantastic. I know "elite" get’s thrown around HFBoards like the flu, but I think the word definitely applies to Kyrou here. His edgework is something to behold. During the skating drills today, he looked incredible with his ability to stop, start, spin, and push off all effortlessly. Not only this, but his puck-handling is great too. During warm-up passing drills, I don’t think I saw the puck go on end once. He would settle, dribble, and release with the puck perfectly flat each time. But he didn’t just show this off during the drills. I’d say he was the most dangerous player on the ice today in game. Every time he stepped onto the ice, he found a way to create a dangerous scoring chance, and while it never led to a goal, it sure wowed the crowd. But, everyone probably already knew about Kyrou’s skating and puck movement, so the question remains if there is any other area he improved in. Well, I’d say his ability to get the pucks out of pressure was certainly noticeable. It didn’t matter if there was a scrum or if there was just 1-on-1 between the defense and offence, whatever the occasion, Kyrou would consistently find the puck on his stick at the end of it. He would dive head first into any play in order to walk away with the puck, something I don’t ever remember him doing until now. Suffice it to say, Kyrou looked every bit as dynamic as we hoped. The only problem that still remains is his shot. Don’t get me wrong, it’s better than it was last camp. The release especially looks much better. My only problem with his shot is that he doesn’t seem to get most of his body into it. For example, on one shooting drill, it didn’t look like he would put much weight into his leading foot when attempting a wrister. Each time, the puck had hardly any lift on it, making for a pretty easy save each time. I can’t really speak on if his reported consistency issue has been fixed yet, but as of now, his shot will still need time to develop. Overall though, there is very good reason to be excited about him.
