Vladimir Romanov: I was offered to buy Liverpool in 2005

The owner of Hearts, FBK Kaunas, and Partizan Minsk Vladimir Romanov has revealed that he had been close to buying the Premier League’s Liverpool FC about six years ago.

«When Kaunas played Liverpool in the second qualifying round of the Champions League in 2005, David Moores, then the owner of the club, offered me to buy it for 200 milliom pounds. I came to England, looked at their facilities, and thought: «Well, the price is OK, they have considerable real estate, and star players.» Gerrard alone cost some 100 million in the market.

But in the end I didn’t venture to buy such a club. By that time I was so ground down in Scotland with Hearts, where I was depicted as an idiot. They have their own mafia there! I thought that if I ever acquired a brand like Liverpool, they wound really hound me to death! I offered one of my Russian acquaintances to chip in, he refused, and I decided not to take such a risk on my own.

Of course, I regret it today. You don’t get a chance to become a legendary club owner every day... Six months later Moores sold Liverpool for some 400 million! The price doubled!» said Romanov in an interview with Sovetsky Sport Futbol.
