Sergey Semak becomes the oldest Russian player to score in the Champions League

Zenit St. Petersburg veteran midfielder became the oldest Russian player to find the net in a European club competition after his team beat Benfica Lisbon in the Champions League 1/8 final.

The former CSKA Moscow skipper, who is 35 years 11 months old, replaced former Zenit midfielder Aleksander Gorshokov as the most aged Russian goal-scorer in history.

Meanwhile, Semak’s teammate Roman Shirokov equalled the record for the highest number of goals scored by a Russian player in a Champions League season, after netting two in Wednesday’s match.

He now has five, as do former Russia internationals Yury Nikiforov and Valery Karpin.
