Valery Karpin: It ain’t over till the fat lady sings

Spartak Moscow head coach Valery Karpin believes his team is capable of redressing the four-goal difference in the second leg of the Europa League against Porto. The first game saw the Russians beaten in Portugal with a score of 1:5.

In his interview with Sport-Express Karpin also gave his opinion on the reasons why Aiden McGeady doesn’t look like himself in the last games.

Do you think it’s possible to compensate the four-goal difference from the first leg?

In theory, everything is possible. Of course, it’s very, very difficult, but it ain’t over till the fat lady sings. We have nothing to lose. The football history has examples of teams coming from three and even four goals behind. I remember Spartak defeating Werder Bremen 4:1, and later losing to them 2:6.

However, we shouldn’t think about the result now. We have to score a goal, then another one, and we’ll see what happens next.

Why does Aiden McGeady fall out of sync with the team’s play?

Probably, he’s not focused enough.

Maybe, he does not fit into the team’s playing style?

Well, he did fit into it, so that’s not the case. And we have not changed our playing style since last season. McGeady’s problem is only about himself, not the whole team.
