CSKA president: Russian league needs to expand to 18 clubs

Yevgeny Giner, the president of CSKA Moscow, has proposed that the Russian Premier League needs to be expanded from 16 to 18 clubs.

«I believe that it would be good for our footballers to play more games in a season. At the moment, after changing our timetable to the «autumn-winter» format, the teams can play 34 games a season easily,» the head of the Moscow club was quoted by RIA Novosti.

«Besides, there are 20 clubs in the first division, whilst the top flight has only 16. That doesn’t add up.»

Earlier the Spartak Moscow owner Leonid Fedun dismissed the idea as «purely mathematical» and inconsequential.
