LONDON -- Antonio Conte has revealed that he did not deploy his Chelsea team in a 3-4-3 formation from the start of the season because he wanted to try and implement a 4-2-4 system at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have emerged as the Premier League’s form team since Conte’s decision to switch to 3-4-3 at half-time of a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in late September, scoring 16 goals and conceding none to record five consecutive victories.
But while the results of the 3-4-3 experiment have been spectacular, Conte admits that 4-2-4 -- a formation he favoured at times during his time coaching in Serie A and trialled extensively during Chelsea’s preseason -- was his first-choice system.
Asked why he did not turn to 3-4-3 earlier, Conte said: "It was because in my mind I wanted to play with 4-2-4. I wanted to start the season with this because you have wingers who are strong one vs. one and I like to play with two strikers very close together. But I changed it.
"I must be honest, during the preseason when we started to prepare, there was 4-2-4 but also 3-4-3 because this squad could play both systems. I changed it because it gave us more balance defensively and offensively.
