Salavat Yulaev will play in European Сhampions Cup
The European Champions Cup will take place in St. Petersburg from January 5 to January 8, 2012. The official name of tournament will be the President’s Cup. The KHL will be represented by the holder of the Gagarin Cup, Salavat Yulaev Ufa, according to the club’s official website.
Other participants of the President’s Cup will be champions of Sweden (Farjestad), Finland (HIFK), Czech Republic (Trinec), Switzerland (Davos) and Germany (Eisbaren).
The teams will be divided into two divisions, each playing a round-robin tournament. The division winners will play in the final. The draaw will take place later.
The tournament’s prize money shall make CHF 1 million. The winner will receive CHF 400,000; second place – CHF 200,000; the teams in places from 3rd to 6th will receive CHF 100,000 each.
It should be noted that the tournament was held in such format from 2005 to 2008. Avangard Omsk, Dynamo Moscow, Ak Bars Kazan and Metallurg Magnitogorsk were its winners. In 2008-09 season there was held the Champions League, won by Switzerland’s Zurich.
