An interview with: Maria Sharapova

Q: How does it feel to be back in the final?

Sharapova : It feel good coming back to the place where you have accomplished so much and to be in the position to regain that position and I am happy how I have progressed and I started in the first round and I had tough matches and I have improved and I hope to continue improving.

Q: You are playing very well and serving well…

Sharapova : Obviously it is extremely important to serve well and an important part of my game and it is important on clay --- the difference is because you win the points differently than on the fast court and you open up the court …….

Q: Looking ahead and considering the semi final in France last year, What take to improve

Sharapova: It was a tough one and it was a great tournament for her and her first Grand Slam and a tough match for me and she …. I have had tough times against her … lost twice and then I won the last time in Miami but I lost a couple before that and was happy to turn things around. Tomorrow is a new match and hope to play like Miami.

Q: Were you expecting to have Serena……. This is another high profile pullout. What are your opinions.

Sharapova : It a situation …… its tough and in terms of Serena playing 6 matches in 8 days and only one day off coming here and its difficult to play and when you have 5 or 6 matches because she didn't have a bye and it doesn't matter who it is …. it is challenging and so in a week or so with the French Open. I was in her position also here and it’s a tough position because you get yourself into that position and you just want to be healthy

Q: Every player is more afraid of getting hurt and again something can happen……

Sharapova : Not any more that any other time – you have a additional big event and with the French Open in a weeks time then Wimbledon and then the Olympics and then the US Open – like, 4 Grand Slams in a row back to back and not getting scared and just monitoring how you feel and not over do it and some people can play more and some less – its different.

Q: Regarding the success that you have had – how important is the influence of Thomas as a coach and how different is it with him and your father.

Sharapova : It is difficult to change for me having heard the same voices for so long and I was young and practicing at home and Michael was coaching for over 7 years and I had a similar voice for so long its great and it comes to your brain a little bit different and Thomas changed something in my game and I thing it was more encouragement and he came in and believed in me and tried to get me to the top and it was …… It was tough when you know something worked in the past and you let go.

Q: What input does your father give now in your training?

Sharapova : He is involved in my tennis and him and Tomas talk and he is on permanent vacation and hiking and skiing and enjoying his life and when I am home then he is there and involved in my daily life.

Q: You have improved much with your movement….. I used to say you looked like a cow on ice.

Sharapova : I am sure it still looks like that ….. it feels like that. The most important thing is physically felling stronger on the court and handling longer rallies and I recover better. Saving myself and being able to recover better ….. I have improved a lot in that department.

Q: Your slide, does that come naturally…. Inaudible.

Sharapova : You can work on it but it comes different for everyone … inaudible ….. I think a lot is ntural but you can definitely improve it.

Q: ….. travelling or being on tour and Sasha.

Sharapova : Expensive phone bills. We speak as much as we can but he is still in Turkey for another couple of weeks.

Q: …. no benefits?

Sharapova : He'd love to be part of the travel – he has a career and cannot be part of the tour.
