Maria Sharapova is banned from playing tennis, Ana Ivanovic exits first round for second straight year, Eugenie Bouchard is not at her usual self since last year’s locker-room fall at the US Open.
US Open is underway but the glamour quotient is quickly diminishing from the the final Grand Slam of the year at the Flushing Meadows.
Sharapova is missing the third straight Grand Slam of the year after she was handed a two-year ban by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in June for failing a drug test. The 2006 US Open champion was tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January. The substance was banned at the start of 2016.
This means Sharapova will continue to stay away from competitive tennis for another five majors before she returns to the court. The 29-year-old has won five Grand Slams, winning French Open twice.
IVANOVIC’S POOR RUN CONTINUES
Former world No. 1 and Serbian beauty Ivanovic exited the first round at Flushing Meadows for the second straight year after a 6-7, 1-6 loss to Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic.
The 28-year-old former French Open champion has struggled to find form this year, failing to go past the third round in any of the majors. She suffered third-round defeats at the Australian and French Open, before bowing out in the third opening rounds of Wimbledon and the ongoing US Open.
BOUCHARD’S RISE AND FALL
Considered the next face of women’s tennis and drawing comparisons with the glam girls of the sport, Bouchard has failed to match the onfield highs of either Anna Kournikova, Sharapova or Ivanovic with a first-round defeat at the US Open.
She was in the form of her life in 2014 reaching the final at Wimbledon and the semi-finals of the Australian and the French Open, but things were not the same in 2015.
Bouchard had an unhappy ending to US Open last year after she slipped on a wet locker room floor following a mixed doubles match. She sustained a concussion and that forced her to withdraw from her fourth-round singles match. Following that the Canadian star filed a lawsuit against United States Tennis Association (USTA) and is seeking millions of dollars in damages.
