Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolay Khabibulin will spend 15 days in prison

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolay Khabibulin will spend 15 days in prison after being found guilty of driving under the influence and speeding violation in Arizona last August.

The 38-year-old Russian was handed a 30-day jail term, including 15 days days to be served at home with an electronic monitoring device. Khabibulin must also enter an alcohol treatment program, according to iNews880.

Khabibulin was arrested and charged in February of last year in Scottsdale. Police say he was doing 70 miles per hour in a 45 miles oer hour zone. According to them the breathalyzer showed Khabibulin had at least twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

At first Khabibulin attempted to appeal the conviction, but this Tuesday he withdrew the appeal and accepted the jail sentence. According to his Phoenix attorney, Mark DuBiel quoted by Sports Illustrated, the Russian decided to drop the appeal because the case could have prevented him from going to the Oilers’ training camp and could have lasted into the season.

Khabibulin will now start serving the sentence this weekend.
