Brett Haber: Maria, thanks for spending some time with us. A lot of good things had happened in the last couple of years. If someone had come to you 10 years ago and said when you are 28 you are going have won 5 grand slam titles but the only one you would have won twice is the FO. You would have said to them what?

Maria Sharapova: Yeah, I don’t think I would have believed any words of those. I think starting with 5 GS and ending 2 FO. I think the special part is that my name will be edged on all the GS tournaments, I think that’s a pretty special thing when I think about it. Because when people tell me about numbers and I think its nice to hear it but I think…when I think of sometimes when I see fans’ pictures when they are visiting the grounds of GS after the tournament is finished and they get to see the trophy and take pictures of it or when they get to see the signs with all the champions and they get to see my name on it - I know there is something more special about that than when someone says oh you have achieved this. It’s very memorable when you are able to hold that trophy and live that moment within yourself.

Brett: One of six in the open era to complete the career grand slam. When did you admit to yourself as 2012 was unfolding and you were getting close that you wanted that? That it was important to you?

MS: Knowing how difficult the FO was for me, knowing how hard it was for me to achieve good results there and consistent results match after match, I knew that once I physically was felt that I was capable of doing that it gave so much more confidence mentally, and especially going through the injury and coming back and winning the FO as my first GS back , and completing the GS. I think…I don’t know if there is, of course, there is always better timing for everything, it could have been my first slam back after the injury but the fact that it was that slam to complete the 4 slams was very special.

Brett: What must had it been like for you in 2008-2009 when the game was taken away from you by an injury, a thing that you simply couldn’t control.

MS: Well I think injury is one of these things where as an athlete it’s inevitable because…the grind and the physicality of our sport and the long season, you are going to have your little things here and there. I think the biggest surprise for me was how serious the injury was that I had to have…

Brett: Yeah, it wasn’t a little thing…I am not sure all fans appreciate how severe it was and the fact that that’s an injury that a lot of tennis players when they suffer it never come back from it. You got back to number 1 in the world, won multiple slams again. Was there a dark moment for you where you had doubts and said “Yeah, I may never get back”?

MS: I think not really having really many examples of athletes that have come back at tennis world from the shoulder surgery and have competed at high level, I think that brought a little bit of doubt to myself because no matter how small or big a surgery is in the shoulder, it’s such a huge part of the tennis game and I think in a recovery process, especially physiotherapist, not many actually understand the unique aspects of movement, and the serve and the rotation of your shoulder…

Brett: So what kept you going?

MS: You know there are so many great things that tennis has brought me and I was able to do well I was away from the game, but I missed playing, I missed being out there and I missed the mornings where I would wake up and the first drawer I would go to is my tennis clothes. I don’t know it was just a feeling - I wanted that back. You know I grew up in the household where my father was very strong-minded and no matter how tough a situation was or a challenge he would always find the way and a very calm way to make it happen. I think that really encouraged me and I knew that I’d be back, I don’t know at what level but I knew that I’d find the way back.

Part 2: Maria incorporated

Brett: I always hear people in the business talk about the Maria brand. What is the Maria brand to you?

MS: Its tough for me to hear that because I just see myself as the person that has been able to work on many things away from the courts and develop many interests and get to meet really talented people and with that advantage be able to do different things with the things that tennis has been able to give me so…I never call myself a brand because that’s very superficial.

Brett: Your agent Max Eisenbud who’s helped you put a lot of these together, says that you have a PhD in Sports Marketing without ever having gone to college and I think a lot of people would agree with that. And so, when you teach your advanced course in Sports Marketing at Harvard or whatever (Maris is laughing) what will be the chief…say 2 principles that the students need to know that you’ve learned through all of these?

MS: I think the most important thing is the authenticity. Staying authentic to what you believe in, what you do, I mean it’s from the smallest things and to social media. I feel like because I am doing those things it stays true to my voice, like every platform that I have is very different. You know Facebook is a little bit more corporate, I keep Twitter –it’s little bit more sporty, keeping my fans up to with what I am doing and Instagram is more like my inspirational deck where I…whether on my travels, or the things I like to eat, or art that I like to see…so they are very different and a way when I write the things it’s from my voice and I feel like you if are going to do social media that’s the way you do it, that’s who you are. So that authenticity and you know I really believe in a good team and I know it’s one of the toughest thing to find but really surrounding yourself with people that have your best interests and sometimes that financially cost a bit more and you are going to have to invest in that but I think investing in the right team will ultimately make you much more money.

Brett: What drew you into the fashion world?

MS: What drew me into the fashion world? I think the idea of being different and being…my first ever thoughts in fashion were set around Nike because when I was a young girl and I got my first contract with Nike which was just apparel me I would come to the distribution centers and the four big tournaments and with all big athletes, Amelie Mauresmo at that time and I just remember looking at her and she get these two huge bags of free clothes and it was amazing and I was like “this is all free? Nike for her?” and I get this little bag. And I just remember because they didn’t have junior line at that time and I remember everything was really big, the extra small was really huge on me…I would just tailor it to myself, I would cut the shirts and I would roll up the skirts, I mean I looked like a Tom boy because everything was big…but it was the expression of an individuality and that was the first time when I was like ok, fashion is interesting, I get to play with clothes and then little by little when I started doing well and Nike started putting me in outfits that were unique and not worn by everyone else, I was like ok, this is pretty cool and my bags are bigger, more clothes and they actually fit me. So I love the expression of individuality with fashion.
