American player Varvara Lepchenko won't comment on meldonium report

PARIS — American Varvara Lepchenko refused to comment Tuesday on reports that she tested positive for meldonium and served a “silent ban” earlier this year.

Asked directly or indirectly about the positive test eight times during a news conference at the French Open, Lepchenko did not comment.

“At moment I have no comment on any of this,” said the world No. 64 who lost in the first round. “I'm here just to answer tennis questions. If you have any questions about my match, I would gladly answer them. But otherwise, I just have no comments.”

A Russian physical trainer, Anatoly Glebov, who worked at times with Marat Safin and Maria Sharapova, told Russian outlet Sport-Express in an interview published last week that Lepchenko had tested positive for the substance, which has been banned by WADA since Jan. 1.

Lepchenko did not play a tournament between Doha, in late February, and Rome, in mid May. Glebov claimed that she had been granted some sort of amnesty from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) should she take time away.

Lepchenko listed a right knee injury as her reason for being out the two months.

Asked if she wanted to refute Glebov’s claim, Lepchenko responded: “Again, I just – like I said, no comments.”

“Was what he said true?” a journalist asked. “Are you going to deny the reports out there in the media now?”

“Like I said, I have no comments,” Lepchenko said once again. “If you have a question about my match, go on.”

In March, five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova revealed that she had tested positive for meldonium, and nearly 200 Russian athletes have since tested positive for the drug. Sharapova is waiting for a ruling from the ITF following a hearing in London last week.

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Lepchenko is of Russian-Ukrainian descent and has been living in the U.S. since 2002. She has played under the American flag since 2007 and represented the U.S. at the 2012 London Olympics.

The ITF declined comment through spokesman Nick Imison, who write in an email that "the ITF can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a case against Ms. Lepchenko under the Tennis Anti-Doping Program.”

In April WADA announced a change in its rules that could lead to athletes who tested positive for meldonium having their bans overturned.
